I’m ashamed to be so ignorant about the politics, economy and social problems of America. I regret that I don’t keep up with the news. (I should read the news more regularly.)
Bitterly regret is a bit much here. I’d use bitterly regret for something really important
I bitterly regret not being able to say goodbye to my father as he was dying.
