You need to use the subjunctive in this sentence:
If a language were difficult, then people from their country wouldn't speak it.
(This argument is illogical. The difficulty of language accusation is relative. Some people have trouble learning Portuguese, where many others find Portuguese easy to learn. It would not be considered difficult by those who speak it as their native language. A language is difficult to the people who are learning it as an alternate language.)
