Right. So, in this context "que" would be similar to "that" in English. For instance, in English you could say: "I told them that I don't like ice cream". But you can easily skip the word "that" because it's not obligatory to use it. In Spanish that does not happen.
We ALWAYS use "que" and we cannot skip it because otherwise it will sound unnatural.
"I told them (that) I don't like ice cream"
"Les dije QUE no me gusta el helado"
