¿Cuál es la diferencia entre cuantos años sigues y cuantos años tienes ?Puedes dar oraciones como ejemplo.

My friend from Puebla when we met asked how old I was, saying “cuantos años sigues” so I assumed it was an alternative to using tener, then I asked my dad (born and raised Mexican from Guerrero) and he said that’s not right and it’s wrong.. so Is it like new to use seguir for your age or what?

@Jason_Sanchez the standard way to ask someone's age in Spanish is ¿Cuántos años tienes? and a bit more formal ¿Cuál es tu edad?. But what your friend said must be a particular way of asking someone's age at his/her location.

It is incorrect, and as @betto007 suggests, it may be a regionalism.
I can think, though, of another possibility: It is kinda of common to alter the original phrase and use the verb seguir when asking a person who is known for faking their age what their actual age is. It is a sarcastic way of asking them their age while strongly insinuating that you know they're lying.
Now, your friend may have heard the question asked in a scenario such as the one described above and assumed it was just an alternative, hence why they asked you in such a manner; even when most likely you might not be in the group of people faking their age.

BTW, to make it grammatically correct, the question should be "¿De cuántos años sigues?", which is how I've heard it.
