I think the way you put it is more than understandable enough, if she didn't get it maybe it had to do with your pronunciation. Anyway, another way to put it could be:
"Disculpe señorita, quería consultar el estado de un paciente internado"
Like, "pedir información" is kind of okay but it's not the most natural option in my opinion.
