The sentences are correct
Since the word refers to two dates, you can avoid repetition by using the word "year" once. For example, "Ру́сско-япо́нская война начала́сь в ты́сяча девятьсо́т четвёртом и зако́нчилась в ты́сяча девятьсо́т пя́том году́".
In conversational style we can completely omit the word, then it will sound like this: "Ру́сско-япо́нская война начала́сь в ты́сяча девятьсо́т четвёртом и зако́нчилась в ты́сяча девятьсо́т пя́том".

Also when talking about 19XX years (1901-1999) many people shorten their speech by not mentioning "тысяча девятьсот" part. "В сорок пятом году я приехал в Россию" - it doesn`t mean he is a time-traveller and he arrived to Russia in 45 year. It is a shortened version to say "1945 year".
