I don't know where you got the phrase from, but remember that some sentences that you learn by watching movies or reading. Probably you will never hear them in real life and that doesn't mean that is not right way to say it...
but perhaps it is the international and most formal translation possible.🙏

@canoedil56 I think I understand your examples. I believe that you agree that in this case pesada is a temporary condition and therefore the correct verb is estaba.
