¿Cuál es la diferencia entre ¿Dónde trabajaste hoy? y Donde trabajabas hoy? y If you were asking someone where they worked over a period of an hour, do you need to use “trabajabas” instead of “trabajaste”? ?Puedes dar oraciones como ejemplo.

Well, if someone works in a part time job or he doesn't work so long. And you want to know where he worked you might say:

¿Dónde trabajaste hoy?

¿Dónde estuviste trabajando hoy?

If you use “trabajabas" instead of trabajaste you are asking about his past job (He will infer that). But in this case because you are using “today" he will understand. That does not mean that is more appropriate.

In this context “trabajaste" is better because has a connotation of “recent past"

¿Dónde trabajaste hoy?

-Estuve en la oficina.

Trabajaste and Tabajabas are both past tense so they are exchangable broadly speaking.

¿Dónde trabajaste hoy?
The person asking is interested where YOU were.

¿Donde trabajabas hoy?
The person asking is more interested in the PLACE where you were working.

"Trabajabas" is used when someone no longer works there or describes an event that ended at a certain point in the past.

e.g.
¿Dónde trabajabas cuando eras estudiante?
-Mientras entrenaba con su equipo, él se lesionó la rodilla.

"Trabajaste" is better used when someone just finished his/her workday.

e.g.
-¿Trabajaste hoy?
