No cambies la mesa de puesto.
(don't move the table)

Me moví de lugar.
Me moví de puesto.

However, lugar also means place ( I visited a place - Visite un lugar) in this case they mean different things.

In general way, for things it's not right use 'puesto' instead you can hear somethings like :
1. Cambiar la cama de lugar
Move the bed to other place.
2. Un lugar para el carro
A place for the car
3. Éste lugar(turístico) es hermoso.
This (touristic)place is beautiful.

In your refrigerator "hay un lugar para huevos y un lugar para las verduras.

Now, only persons have a "puesto", a pretty good example is talking about work. Here, "puesto" is a colloquial way for 'category'. For example in a school : puesto de director (category of principal), puesto de maestro (category of teacher)...
In this case if you want change of category then you want "cambiar de puesto".

Other use for "puesto" is like 'stand'. Please you must notice that on following places always are a PERSON at least, ALL time, I mean the seller.
In one popular market you'll always hear something like :
-el puesto de verdura
Vegetable' stand
-el puesto de carne
Meat's stand
-el puesto de ropa
Clothes' stand

At a MALL the equivalent of "puesto" is "local", for example
"el local de vestidos"
the dress' stand
"el local de joyería"
The jewelry' stand

"lugar" is a so general word for 'place' that it's right for use its with persons too, I mean:
-YO vivía ahí pero después me fuí a otro lugar
I used to live there but after I went somewhere else
-Me gusta estar en éste lugar
I like being in this place
-Recomiéndame un lugar bonito en Estados Unidos.
Recommend me a nice place in the United States.

*Summarizing,
-Basically, everything(including to persons) have a "lugar" (place)
-Only persons have a "puesto" (category/stand)

@Dann_01 yes that was an amazing explanation! You’re English is very good, do not doubt yourself. I see very minor issues. In the beginning, instead of in use the when referring to the way of something. Also, something is not plural :) it would be singular. Something vs somethings. Even if you’re referring to multiple it’ll still be singular. (I’m struggling with this in Spanish lol! You did very good though, that’s all I caught was the first paragraph. Thank you for your help I hope I could help a little too :)
