Я живу рядом со своей гимназией.
Имеется ввиду гимназия, где я учусь, поэтому она "моя" или "своя".

@AnyaMeow Hi, thank you, I know it, though imho both translations are possible. Старшая школа is okey in the USA, while гимназия is better in Russia.
In Russia, cтаршая школа is a restricted term in the field of education whereas гимназия is what people say in everyday life. Я хожу в старшую школу. Я хожу в гимназию. Speaks for itself.

@AnyaMeow Agree. I use " high school" for "gymnasium" to avoid ambiguity ( I mean "спортивный/гимнастический зал.")

High school - это средняя школа
в отличие от higher school - институт/университет (высшее образование).
High school может существовать в разных формах - и обычная школа, и лицей, и гимназия. Суть в том, что в этих заведениях получают среднее образование.
Честно говоря, впервые слышу "старшая школа".
Т е. High scool - это школа (не институт).

Я живу рядом со своей школой/неподалёку от своей школы.

@AnyaMeow это именно в сериалах так переводят, неизвестно кто
Но у нас high school переводится как средняя школа (общепринятый перевод)
А если говорить про здание - просто школа (как заведение; где получают среднее образование) в отличие от института/университета.

Значения слова "старший":
1. Раньше других родившийся или появившийся, имеющий сравнительно с кем-чем-нибудь больше лет. Старшее поколение. Наш старший товарищ.
2. Самый большой по возрасту, самый старый, самый ранний среди кого-чего-нибудь. Старший в семье.
3. Стоящий выше других по званию, должности, служебному положению. Старший рабочий.
Школа не может быть старшей.

@AnyaMeow википедия - ненадежный источник, там любой человек может написать все, что угодно.
К тому же, в википедии "старшая школа" переведена как этап обучения. А в запросе "школа" - в значении здания. Это все равно, что сказать, что я живу рядом со старшими классами школы.
Но я не буду спорить. Останемся каждый при своем мнении.
