Is modern Greek easier or harder than Ancient Greek? And can Greeks understand Ancient Greek (for example Attic dialect)? Or not really?

It depends on your level of exposure to the said language. It is much easier to expose yourself in a living language, you can also do it passively.
If you are going to study ancient texts or have more interest in glossology, then it will pay off to learn ancient Greek. But that requires more discipline.
So I would say that it depends on your motivations.

I assume a lot of the modern language will make sense since you will be familiar with its roots.
