@MaryLloyd the comparison is between "Tú" and "Usted". Both words mean "You", but in the Spanish used in America (the continent) "Tú" is for casual/informal use and "Usted" is for formal use. Ex:
At home
- Mamá, ¿tú sabes dónde dejé mis libros? (Mom, do you know where I left my books?)
At school
- Profesor, disculpe ¿tendrá usted un minuto para conversar? (Professor, excuse me, do you have a minute to talk?)
