The term Lawyer is a generic term used to describe some who is licensed to give legal advice. Attorneys, barrister and solicitor are all types of lawyers. Attorneys (US) and barristers (UK) can plead or defend cases. In the UK, Solicitors work directly with the client and hire a barrister who specializes in the specific area of law.
I believe an advocate is a synonym for attorney and barrister.

Unlike its cognates in Romance languages, "advocate" in English does not mean "lawyer", and could thus be interpreted as a false friend. An advocate is simply one who advocates.
For example:
• "She is an advocate for animal rights."
• "I am an advocate of large-scale economic reform."
• "They are LGBT rights advocates."
Note also that the noun and verb forms of the word "advocate" are not pronounced the same.

Advocate (n.) can also be a job title. You can be an advocate for a person or person(s) with disabilities, for example. It doesn't just mean that you support certain people or a certain cause. It typically means you are taking action to support those people or that cause. Ex: someone who thinks people with disabilities should be treated fairly and equally is not necessarily an advocate. Someone who writes letters to the government, motivates their neighbors to do the same, speaks out and talks to local news or makes public media posts is an advocate.
