those words have lot of uses. for example: estoy por comer means I'm about to eat. and no Tengo nada para comer means I have nothing to eat

The "por" and "para" can be a little confusing because of their translation -usually 'for'. There are certain rules to know when to use each one correctly.
I would take a lot of time to explain it, but I found this good page that may be useful to answer this rules and usages. I'm not very good explaining it properly, so maybe this will help better: http://studyspanish.com/grammar/lessons/porpara
