Japan = Nihon
There are two ways to write it in japanese, hiragana and kanji.
In hiragana, にほん。
In kanji, 日本。
The pronunciation is the same though.

I heard that you could also say Nippon, what is the difference

Originally 倭 (Wa/Yamato)
Then changed to (Nippon)
(Nihon) came later as a sort of nickname one could say

@jchavespinto Nihon and Nippon are both used. Nihon is your safe guess. Kanji remains the same.
It's 日本語 (nihongo) for Japanese
But Japan airlines is called "Nippon Airways"
I think it has to do with which Kanji you put after the 日本, that decides if it becomes nihon or nippon. Don't quote me on that, though!
