"277 miles in diameter" = the shape is a circle, and the furthest points are 277 miles away from each other
"277 miles long" = the shape is a line, and the end points are 277 miles apart
It's not a matter of formality. The Grand Canyon is linear (in the shape of a line), so you can only talk about its length. Only circles have a diameter.
