I am falling asleep would be used if you were saying you are sleepy.
I fell asleep would be if you were saying you went to sleep.

'Fall' ( present tense) so if used together with 'asleep' ( past tense) it makes the sentence incorrect. It's better to use "I fell asleep" for this case :)
