¿Cuál es la diferencia entre empezar y comenzar ?Puedes dar oraciones como ejemplo.

I've heard they are interchangeable. But is there a subtle difference such as one being more formal than the other? Or is one more prevalent in certain regions? Which one should I default to in the USA? Thanks!

I'm from Argentina and empezar is definitely the most common one here, I feel like it's also more informal. If I was sending a formal email I might use comenzar instead of empezar but never when talking. I don't know if it's the same in other countries tho.

they are synonyms and, at least in colloquial terms in Guadalajara, perfectly interchangeable.

acaba de empezar a llover.
acaba de comenzar a llover.

ya empezó la película.
ya comenzó la película.

both ways are very common.
