Pretérito perfeito é usado pra uma ação que começo e depois acabou ja o pretérito imperfeito é usado pra expressar uma ação em determinado periodo de tempo

Terminações do pretérito perfeito do indicativo (verbos regulares)
1.ª conjugação (-ar)
(Eu) radical + -ei
(Tu) radical + -aste
(Ele) radical + -ou
(Nós) radical + -amos ou -ámos
(Vós) radical + -astes
(Eles) radical + -aram
2.ª conjugação (-er)
(Eu) radical + -i
(Tu) radical + -este
(Ele) radical + -eu
(Nós) radical + -emos
(Vós) radical + -estes
(Eles) radical + -eram
3.ª conjugação (-ir)
(Eu) radical + -i

It's an action that starts in the past and finish in the past too.
Very similar when we use the I/ he/she /you with used.
Like:
"I used read when I was kid."
"Eu costumava ler quando eu era criança."
But in portuguese we can "mix" with the simple past.
And the same sentence can be told like:
"Eu lia quando eu era criança."
And still continues with the exactly sense of the first exemple.
