You will hear of the "village hall". That is usually a different place where they hold village events.

In a city you will have several layers of local government. The city itself will be divided into local council areas and each of them will have council offices or civic centres.
Whether they have a "town hall" or "civic centre" normally depends on what the council calls it.

In a rural area you may also have parish councils which look after the interests of villages within a larger council.
However, the organisation differs widely from place to place. It's a bit of a mess frankly.

Sydney has a town hall. It's just next to Town Hall Station. =)
In all fairness, though, the town hall is just the seat of the Lord Mayor of Sydney - which is to say, it's where the metropolitan council works from. The state government meets in Parliament House, a few blocks away.

Ahh! Right! I've never been to the town hall, but I know the station! Thank you for explaining about the difference between the town hall and parliament house!

You should visit sometime - it's a fairly impressive building. Plus, it's right between St Andrew's Cathedral and the Queen Victoria Building, both of which are similarly old and grand. =)
You are the one in Sydney, right? Or am I confusing you with someone else?
