You would hear trash bin more in the UK, while you hear trash can a bit more in the US. Though, no one would look at you weirdly if you say trash bin in the US.

They are the same thing it just depends on your where you are, kind of like a dialect.
Examples:
-Do you mind throwing that in the trash can for me?
-Do you mind throwing that in the trash bin for me?

@nonpretension: Actually that does make sense because a trash bin is usually made of metal and a trash can is usually made of plastic.

@bram i thought it was the other way around, but maybe I'm mistaken. :)

I think the word "bin" is used mostly by British speakers of English. For example a Brit would say "Throw that in the bin" and an American would say "in the trash." It can be a regional thing.

They have the same purpose. You throw away trash in both but a trash can is a bit bigger while a trash bin is usually smaller like this:

There really is no difference between the two.
Can you throw this trash in the trashcan.
Don't forget to throw your papers in the trash bin.

The difference is regional. So depending on the area, one is more likely to be used than the other. Also it is more common to refer to a trashcan as a bin in the UK than the US.
