Beelzebex is correct. I would like to add that you should use "mirar" when you're actively seeing/watching something and see when it's passive. It's like the difference between to listen and to hear.

Mirar is more like "look", and ver is more like "to watch/see"
Mira! = look!
Estoy viendo (ver) el televisor = I'm watching TV
Lo ves? = Do you see it?
No miré (mirar) = I didn't look

@Fluence51: Al traducir oraciones, las dos cambian de uso. Ninguna se puede traducir directamente ya que se usan en bastante de expresiones.
@orangeelmo: I would suggest you just expose yourself to the different places where each word is used, as they are both translated into English differently in different expressions.
For example:
Estaba viendo (ver) el televisor = I was watching (ver) television
Te estaba mirando (mirar) = I was watching (mirar) you
As you can see, the same word in English might use separate words in Spanish, just as the same word in Spanish might use different words in English.
