@anabsolutelynewbie It means you should just accept gifts without being critical. It comes from measuring a horse's health and age by its teeth, and the idea is that you should just smile and politely accept it.

I heard that when people used to use horses for work, you could tell if a horse was treated harsh or getting old by looking in the horses mouth.
So the saying is recommending that you shouldn't look at presents too closely. If a present isn't wonderful quality, it is still probably better then not getting a present.
