Whenever I watch a Kdrama I started to notice something. Usually whenever someone is surprised or confused about something they say "네?" instead of "뭐?". I know that 네 is yes but it's always confused me. Why dont they just say "뭐"?

뭐 is like saying "what?" I'm not sure about 네 though....

"뭐" is basically informal speech, like the type of term to be used in the context of friends. As you said, "네" can mean yes when said with an affirmative intonation, but when it's used in a questioning context, it's just a formal/polite way of questioning something said, like "what?" or "huh?"
