¿Qué significa "In what capacity did she work for you?" ?

This is one of reference check questions. I want to know what does this question mean or what does HR person wants to know by asking this one. It would be great if you can give me some examples.

Simply "we were co-workers" is fine.

If a person reported to you, or worked in your company, what was her function (= in what capacity).

For instance, was she an administrator, a director etc.

@maple88 Thanks for answering my question! so it means HR person is asking what her responsibilities were when she worked with me? or HR person is asking she strengths? we were co-workers.

"...for you" implies that you were her manager. If you were merely co-workers, appropriately, you would say that she didn't work for you - that she and you were co-workers. If you were speaking on behalf of the company, like an HR person or an officer of the company - then it would be correct.

@squidlydeux Thank you for letting me know. I was asked to be her reference a few weeks ago, and today, she told me her another reference got a reference call from the HR of the company. She told me that it was one of their questions. I was her co-worker, and could you let me know how should I answer for the question as a previous co worker?
