These sentences are really similar but there is a small difference.
For A, he was already sitting in the chair at this moment and closes his eyes.
For B, it sounds more like he was about to sit down in his chair and was closing his eyes at the same moment.
So A, Already sitting and then closes his eyes.
B, Sitting and closing his eyes at the same time.
Does this make sense?

Well, both mean the same thing but its more correct to use past continuous and then simple past
