After only a few seconds I was brought into another world. Who could have expected anything like that! The fiddle was so full of life and joy, whereas the guitar was exquisite like a fog that drifted into every fold of the notes the fiddler produced. I felt every cell of my whole body was filled with some kind of actual substance; the bliss of music.

With familiar... perhaps "I became familiar..."? I just took a "so" out because there was two. 🙂

Your sentence is clear. I would say:

"It is probable but I cannot tell what the chance of it happening is."

(The grammar of かも is shown as a particle in the dictionary. I just looked it up and it says the full particle includes しれない etc. I'll remember it all as one word and look out for anything similar. If I see かも I'll know its 〜ない isn't negative.)

The example I was told for 全く！was if my Mum found my laundry (dirty socks) left on the floor. She would say 全く！.

(My Mum has lost interest in my socks many decades ago, but that's what I was told. 👣)

In the dictionary there are several different meanings and one of them is "Good grief!" which would be a similar expression. I have seen it in anime occasionally as an expression of frustration.

I have also seen the combinations in the dictionary. The reason it came up was which word I should use for "very", like "I'm very interested" and I was told not to use 全くfor that. 🙂

You don't need to write kana at all. I usually look up words... and I even have a furigana dictionary (book) which I can finally use! 😊

Sometimes you will hear "naughty" used for both meanings. A policeman might say to a man "Who's been a naughty boy then?" This is partly joking but also mildly insulting to the man. So there are various ways to use it, I think you could tell by the context.

You can use 'naughty' for a pet too.

By the way, most of the English vloggers try to get more clicks, so they are always doing cat cafés or rabbit island... or other "surprising" features of Japanese life.

These aren't things that interest me much. I don't really want to know about Tokyo or a fake old street for tourists in Kyoto. These aren't what I like about Japan.

Yes, I think it's because the [enter] key means 'choose' (what you have typed) and 'choose' (what's on the predictive text)... so it comes out twice if there's something on the list. どうかな？

We live by the Thames Estuary. Can you see the baby gulls with the adults? The babies seem as big as the parents but they're mottled and more fluffy.

There are various gulls here, the ones in the video are quite big. The most common is slightly smaller and makes a noise like laughing. There is also a seabird that has a very sad flute-like call out on the flats at night.

In the winter a lot of birds come to feed here, including Brent geese. And those tiny birds at the water's edge... they include knot, dunlin and plovers. The temperature was about zero, and the small birds only weigh a few ounces, so they eat a lot. We also have redshanks and egrets. It is better in the winter... in the summer there are too many tourists. 🙀😅

I wanted to add my thoughts about this title (I haven't bought it as I'll explain). You mentioned that "gourmet" didn't sound right with "samurai". (Incidentally, there was a Netflix comedy series called Samurai Gourmet in the USA which might interfere with her Google searches.)

When I think of "gourmet" in English it seems to be "fine dining" and the idea sounds OK for our culture which is confused about food. The people had a peasant diet, probably with a lot of fish, in the early days. But almost as soon as we became more wealthy we were conquered by the Normans and then (from around 1500) spread and traded across the world.

I guess this (and the loss of our wild traditional meat animals: deer and boar, etc.) gave us a mix of traditions and there isn't really a strong national diet, apart from fish and chips, English breakfast... and pies. 🤣😂

I remember when Indian and Chinese cooking became popular here in the 1960s, although it wasn't really ethnic cooking, the cooks were very good. I think that is why it was so popular. Our own cooking is not inherently good I'm afraid. 😅

So here, I think the idea of "better cooking" is easy to understand, although "gourmet cooking" certainly sounds rather French. Now, I haven't eaten Japanese food in Japan so I'm assuming a lot, but people tell me everyday food is a much higher standard than our indigenous cooking. In that context I find it hard to place the word "gourmet" in Japan.

Anyway, I'm going on a bit now, but that's why I found the talk interesting but I'm not so attracted to her book. I'm currently looking for a good ramen book. 🍜

I think what you describe, giving more significance to things than they deserve, is very common. Contemporary "art" is all about this, and it is not enough for something to be good, it must also have an "idea" and "meaning" and some kind of "symbolism".

In English, we say this is "artifice" or "contrivance", and put simply it is pretentious. There is also a kind of reaction against it which seeks "authenticity" but that is often even more pretentious in its own way. 🙀

I have nothing against things having meaning, but the work of say Damien Hirst or Tracy Emin (whose meaning is always explained 🙄) is not terribly new or interesting either. And of course the same thing occurs in music, theatre and poetry etc. too.

I read about Inazo Nitobe and I read his book. It was interesting. His writing style, in the English of the time, and the history of those days is of course a bit difficult. But I learned something about Bushido.

At the end he wonders about the legacy of Bushido and the future of Japan. I think he would have been interested to see how it all turned out today.
