The first sentence is a remark about the mountain's appearance. This statement might refer to a mountain you saw two weeks ago, yesterday, or maybe earlier today.
"Seeing it from a distance, that mountain looks like Mt. Fuji."
(added it, subject it == the mountain that looks like Mt. Fuji)
This second sentence is only said when you are looking at the mountain that looks like Mt. Fuji. If you are not looking at the mountain right now, you are not "seeing it from a distance" right this moment. (今、山に見ている )
