Well, both are the same meaning. You can choose either. The only difference is the way the sentence will be formed. Also 과 can be replaced with 와.
Ex)
랑 - "저는 연필이랑 종이가 필요해요."
과/와 ="저는 연필과 종이가 필요해요."

과(와) & 랑(이랑) has same meaning.
The different thing is
랑 is more suitable at colloquial,
과(와( is more suitable at literary English.
But this is really not important. So you don’t need to tooooooo care about it!
