Could someone please explain if there is a rule when there is no tone in a syllable? E.g xuésheng vs liúxuéshēng. Why sheng has no tone in the first case?

......In fact I pronounce it as xuéshēng.Northern people maybe like pronouncing some words as you say.

xue2sheng0 is used in daily speaking.i think because we often use this word so in this way we can speak with a high speed…but when i was young and the first time i learned this word ,it must be xue2sheng1.i did not notice the changing of tone on it with my growing up until this question showed up…

I see, I am just a little bit confused because in my textbook sometimes it is written xuésheng and sometimes xuéshēng. And I don't understand if one of them is a mistake. Also, in my audio files I feel like they pronounce it rather xuésheng, i.e. no tone over the second syllable. So confusing 😱

@_maneka: when you speak ,use xue2sheng0,when you write , xue2sheng1.but we almost do not write the tone on the top of a char

If there is no tone in a syllable, it means you need to say it in 1 but in a slightly lower/soft voice.
