The e and a sounds are very distinct to native English speakers, but I know hearing the difference is difficult for people whose native language doesn't distinguish between those sounds.
It also doesn't help that when speaking quickly, native English speakers in some regions may pronounce "catch up" the same as "ketchup" with a slightly different intonation. This is specific to the word "catch" though. The sounds are not generally interchangeable.
