Pregunta de Japonés

Can you help me understando the use of 聞く as both ˜listening˜ and ˜asking˜. Is it only contextual? Even then many times I cannot understand it.
For example, once I told a child on the plane "お母さんに聞きなさい” intending to tell the child "Listen to your mother". Or in reality, did I say something like "Go ask your mother"?
Thank you for your answers!
