If someone were starting up a food drive or common kitchen (like your tv show), they might want basic (staple) food items used by most people in that area. Some examples might be rice, bread, dried pasta, dried beans, canned/frozen vegetables, potatoes, onions, eggs, dried milk, cheese, salt, pepper, cooking oil. Many can be stored for a long time as well. Staples vary by area/people. Like for me, soy sauce would be a staple item.

Staple foods typically mean food that is eaten a lot. Most people I know wouldn’t say it that way though.
“Bring something everyone will want” would be a more common way to say it. Or “bring the basics”
It’s correct English, just not a common phrase where I live
