I'm not 100% sure and you will not have to worry about this if your final objective is to speak casually and talk in the internet or in person. In Brazil (at least in Rio, were used to live) we usually just use "Isso" and "esse". For me it feel like "Isto" is like something you dont really, know what it is or that you are pointing at, like "Pega isto ai pra mim, por favor" what I would translate to "Get this for me, please" while pointing to the thing. "Este" feels to me more like a thing you have in hands or you are very close to, and used when the person you are talking to knows about you are talking about but not specifically. Like, if Im talking about shoes and I say "Get my show for me" and the person dont know which one to get, you can go get it yourself, show to the person and say "Este/Esse aqui" (This one). Its a bit confuse, but I hope you get it.

@CayanL Yeah, I think. Just for example... Would it be more correct to say "este brinquedo" instead of "isto brinquedo", right? Cause you only say este when you know what you're talking about...

Yeah !!! Thats it. "Isto brinquedo" makes no sense, but "Este brinquedo" does
