" hoy " se refiere al día de hoy y hoy día o hoy en día se refiere a algo referente al tiempo
ejemplos ( hoy ) :
¿hoy irás a la escuela?
( hoy en día ) :
hoy día/ hoy en día las cosas ya no son como antes

- Hoy, mi tía va a visitarme
=> específicamente hoy
Hoy día, mi tía va a visitarme
=> hoy en día (generalmente)

el primer ejemplo está correcto
el segundo no, lo que pasa es que el término "hoy día/ hoy en día" solo se utiliza para comparar algo del presente con algo del pasado,otro ejemplo " hoy día los niños ya no salen a jugar, sólo estan todo el dia en el teléfono"

@Danielv45 entonces, ¿es correcto diciendo ( hoy en día, los niños\ los jóvenes no respetan los viejos mucho)?

Ambos son correctos y significa; en esta época, en estos días.
Pero desde mi punto de vista hoy día, es un pleonasmo !

@LoloAz si ya entendiste el concepto, iría escrito así:
hoy en dia los niños/ los jóvenes no respetan mucho a los viejos

“Hoy día” también puede usarse para cuando estés marcando el inicio de algo, o su creación. Como si lo estuvieses documentando, o como, en un noticiero, cosas de el estilo.
Ejemplo:
“Hoy día Martes 18 de Julio (fecha totalmente inventada) se inaugura el Restaurante Don Julio”
Pero es usado cuando estás siendo formal, cuando lo quieres decir más “casual” es mejor decir:
“Hoy se inaugura el Restaurante Don Julio”
