"John got away with stealing" = John stole something and didn't get in trouble for it. He didn't get caught.
to get away with something: committing something wrong without either anyone noticing or not being punished.

Get away with means having things your way without getting caught aorta speaking. For example, I just got away with my plans of going to that party without my parents knowing.
Or
He used his phones the whole class and the teacher did not notices. He got way with it!

to get away with ~ = to do something wrong or incorrect, and not be in trouble for it or have any problems with it
If you hit someone's car and drive away, you won't get away with it (= avoid trouble for it). The police will find you eventually.
The thief successfully got away with stealing the diamond from the museum (= he did not get arrested for it).
If you don't have enough cooking oil, you can get away with using applesauce instead (= you can use applesauce and not have any problems).
