"John got away with stealing" = John stole something and didn't get in trouble for it. He didn't get caught.
to get away with something: committing something wrong without either anyone noticing or not being punished.

Get away with means having things your way without getting caught aorta speaking. For example, I just got away with my plans of going to that party without my parents knowing.
